The Company
Orlando Simonelli built his first espresso machine in Cessapalombo, Italy, naming it simply '1936' after the year he built it — already an innovative, technically advanced device for its time. The company later became Nuova Simonelli, and remains a genuine pioneer in espresso equipment nearly a century on.
The Product
The Appia Life Compact builds on the proven Appia platform — a machine already trusted by thousands of baristas worldwide — while adding a specific focus on energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness that matters over years of daily commercial use. It comes in two distinct operating philosophies. The Semi version uses a straightforward on/off switch, handing full control of extraction timing to an experienced barista who wants to judge each shot by feel. The Volumetric version programs desired volumes directly into the machine, so shots stop automatically at a consistent target — freeing your barista to start the next task, interact with a customer, or begin another order instead of watching the extraction finish.
Auto steam is available as an add-on per side, letting you automate milk texturing too if consistency there matters as much as it does on the espresso side. Both configurations share the same reliable internal components, so the choice between Semi and Volumetric comes down entirely to how your team likes to work, not a difference in build quality.
Proven Appia reliability, built for efficiency — the Appia Life Compact is designed for high-volume operations that need consistency without waste.
Who It's Built For
For large companies, coffee shop chains, or any high-volume operation that needs to serve an abundance of consistently good coffee without the energy costs and waste that come with less efficient machines. Choose Semi if you've got experienced baristas who want to judge extraction by feel; choose Volumetric if consistency across shifts and freeing up barista time matters more than manual control.
It's a strong fit for a multi-location operator specifically — the same proven Appia reliability across every site, with the efficiency focus that keeps running costs predictable at scale.
