Their story
The company was founded in 1984 as Aerobie, Inc. by inventor and retired Stanford University engineering instructor Alan Adler. For many years they manufactured high performance sport toys, including the Aerobie Pro flying ring, which was used to set a Guinness World Record for farthest thrown object.
Then, in 2004, Alan began studying the brewing process with a simple goal in mind: brew a superior cup of coffee. The AeroPress Original debuted to critical acclaim in 2005, and is now sold in over 80 countries. It has even inspired the World AeroPress Championship, a fan-driven global phenomenon where creative coffee lovers from over 60 countries compete to make the best cup of coffee using their favorite AeroPress recipe.
In 2017 they sold the Aerobie sport toy line and became AeroPress, Inc. Smart design and creativity have always been the heart of what they do, and along with their customers, partners, and the World AeroPress Championship, they are now squarely focused on inspiring even more coffee lovers around the world to revolutionize their coffee routine!

Brewing Basics
If you’re new to brewing, keep these tips in mind to make your perfect cup:
- Press gently
Pressing too fast or with too much force compacts the coffee grounds, making it harder to press into your mug
- Grind size
If the water is running through too fast, your grind is too coarse
- Trust your taste
Rather than focusing on brewing in the “right” way, prioritize finding a method that makes coffee you love. If it tastes good, you’re doing it right!
Brewing Ratio for AeroPress Brewing
In the context of AeroPress brewing, to brew a 600 ml cup of coffee, the recipe could be expressed several different ways: It is consistent (within an acceptable margin of error) to brew with one scoop of coffee + 600gm of water. It is precise using a scale and the 1:17 ratio, to brew with 30-35 grams of coffee and 600 grams of hot water: 35 x 17 = 595. (It should be noted that with brewing volumes larger than the capacity of the AeroPress brew chamber, the effective brew ratio can range 1:10 to 1:13, and the resulting brew will be diluted to the strength of a 1:15-1:19 brew.)

AeroPress XL Coffee Maker
The AeroPress XL Coffee Maker is the supersized answer to a question every Aeropress fan has asked: "Can I brew more than one cup at a time?" With double the capacity of the original, it keeps the cult-favorite immersion-press hybrid brewing style while serving the whole table. Here's why we think it's worth a spot on your counter in 2026.
What Makes the AeroPress XL Different From the Original
The headline difference is volume. The classic Aeropress caps out around 237ml, which is roughly one mug. The XL doubles that to about 470ml, letting us brew two full cups or a single large carafe-sized serving in one push.
It's not just a bigger tube, either. The XL ships with a stainless steel reusable filter, a sturdy carafe, and a redesigned plunger that handles the extra pressure without flexing. Same clean, low-acid cup, twice the output.

How to Use an AeroPress XL Step by Step
Curious about how to use a Aeropress XL? There are two methods worth knowing
- Place the filter in the cap and rinse with hot water.
- Screw the cap onto the chamber and set it on the carafe.
- Add 30g of medium-fine ground coffee.
- Pour 450ml of water at around 85°C.
- Stir for 10 seconds, attach the plunger, and press slowly for 30 seconds.
- Flip the chamber upside down with the plunger seated at the bottom.
- Add coffee and water, stir, and let it steep for 60-90 seconds.
- Cap with the filter, flip onto the carafe, and press. This longer immersion extracts more body and a punchier flavour.
- Pros:
- Brews up to 4 cups in one go
- Same clean, smooth flavour profile as the original
- Includes a stainless steel filter and carafe out of the box
- Tough, travel-friendly construction
- Cons:
- Larger footprint than the classic Aeropress
- Pricier upfront investment
- Not pocket-portable like the Go Plus
Who it's for: Couples, small families, remote workers hosting team meetings, and anyone tired of brewing back-to-back single cups. If you're chasing World Aeropress Championship recipes without halving the ratios, this is your aeropress coffeemaker.
Where to Buy the AeroPress XL (Including South Africa)
Looking for an authentic Aeropress South Africa stockist? We carry the full XL kit at Buna Coffee, shipping nationwide from Cape Town to Pretoria with local warranty support and proper after-sales advice.
A quick care tip from our team: store the plunger either fully pushed through the chamber or completely separated. Leaving it halfway compresses the rubber seal over time and shortens its life. Treat the seal kindly and this coffee maker will run for years.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the capacity of the AeroPress XL Coffee Maker?
The AeroPress XL Coffee Maker has a capacity of approximately 470ml, which is double the original Aeropress. This allows you to brew two full cups or one large carafe-sized serving in a single brew cycle.
How long does it take to brew coffee with an AeroPress XL?
With the AeroPress XL, brewing takes just 1-2 minutes from grind to pour using the standard method. The inverted method, which produces stronger coffee, requires a 60-90 second steep time plus 30 seconds of pressing.
What's included in the AeroPress XL box?
The AeroPress XL comes with the chamber, plunger, stainless steel reusable filter, carafe, measuring scoop, stirrer, and a pack of paper filters. Everything needed for immediate brewing is included.
Can you brew stronger coffee with an AeroPress XL?
Yes. The inverted brewing method allows longer immersion, typically 60-90 seconds, which extracts more body and flavour. This produces a punchier, stronger cup compared to the standard brewing method.
Is the AeroPress XL dishwasher safe?
The AeroPress XL is dishwasher safe on the top rack only. For best longevity, hand-washing is recommended, and always store the plunger either fully separated or fully inserted-never halfway-to preserve the rubber seal.
How does the AeroPress XL compare to a traditional drip coffee maker?
The AeroPress XL uses an immersion-press hybrid method that brews in 1-2 minutes with no paper waste (reusable filter included), producing a clean, low-acid cup. Unlike drip makers, it's portable, durable, and offers more brewing control and flexibility.
