About the Brand

Chemex was invented in 1941 by chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm, who designed it using laboratory glass and simple physics rather than mechanical parts or gimmicks. It has been manufactured in Massachusetts, USA ever since, where every coffeemaker is still hand-blown, polished and fitted by hand. It's held a place in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection since 1943, and remains one of the most recognisable brewing designs anywhere.

The Product

The Chemex is a one-piece pour-over brewer and carafe, shaped from a single piece of non-porous borosilicate glass with no metal or plastic touching the coffee at any stage. Its thick, Chemex-specific filters trap oils and fine sediment that a standard cone filter lets through, giving a lighter, cleaner-tasting cup. It's built as much for the table as for the counter — a brewer you use daily and don't mind people seeing.

Key Features

Non-Porous Borosilicate Glass (No Retained Flavours)

The glass never absorbs coffee oils or odours, so your fiftieth brew tastes as clean as your first.

Thick Bonded Filters (Sediment-Free Cup)

Chemex's own filters are noticeably heavier than a standard V60 filter, trapping fines and oils for a lighter-bodied, sediment-free result.

Hourglass Design (Form Doing the Work of Function)

The waisted shape isn't just visual — the narrow neck acts as a natural airflow channel that helps the pour drain evenly.

Hand-Tied Wood Collar (Made By Hand, Not Machine)

Each collar is fitted and tied by hand at the factory, the same way it's been done since 1941.

Two Sizes (3-Cup or 6-Cup)

Scale from a single mug's worth to a full carafe for the table, without changing your brewing method.

Stovetop-Safe With Care (Stay Warm Longer)

Unlike most glass brewers, a Chemex can sit directly on a low gas flame or glass cooktop to keep coffee warm after brewing.

Dishwasher Safe (Easy Cleanup)

Remove the wood collar and leather tie, and the glass body goes straight into the dishwasher.

Who It's Built For

The Chemex is for you if you treat brewing coffee as part of the morning, not an obstacle to get through it. It suits anyone who wants a brewer that looks as considered as the coffee tastes, and who doesn't mind a slower, more deliberate pour. This is a design that's been sitting in MoMA's permanent collection since 1943 — it was never just about the caffeine.

Summary

The Chemex has barely changed since 1941 because the original design still holds up — a single piece of glass, a hand-tied collar, and a filter thick enough to do the filtering for you. Choose the 3-cup for a solo brew or the 6-cup for the table, and expect the same clean cup either way.
