About the Brand
Comandante was born out of a specialty coffee roastery outside Munich, where founder Bernd Braune kept running into the same problem: no manual grinder on the market could match the clarity of a proper lab-grade grinder. He registered the Comandante brand in 2012, and the real breakthrough came in 2016 with Nitro Blade® — a burr steel developed specifically for hand grinders rather than adapted from electric ones. Every C40 is still handmade just outside Munich, Bavaria, and it remains the grinder that competition baristas and home brewers alike reach for when clarity in the cup actually matters.
The Product
The Comandante C40 MK4 Manual Coffee Grinder is built around one burr: Nitro Blade®, a 39mm conical burr machined from Comandante's own high-nitrogen steel, Nitro Rex®. It's engineered to do what most hand grinders can't — cover Turkish through French press through espresso on a single axle, with a stepped click system that gives you the same setting back every time. This isn't a travel accessory that happens to grind coffee; it's a precision tool that happens to fold down small enough to travel with.

A 39mm conical burr machined from Comandante's proprietary Nitro Rex® steel — over 17% chromium plus vanadium and molybdenum — chosen for edge retention and a completely flavour-neutral grind, not just hardness for its own sake.
Stepped Click Adjustment (Repeatable Settings)
Around 40 click positions move the burr roughly 30 microns at a time, covering a 0–1090 micron range. Dial in a setting once, write it down, and you'll land on the exact same grind next time — no guessing, no drift.
Nitro Rex® Steel Axle & Dual Ball Bearings (Smooth, Consistent Torque)
The stainless steel crank arm and axle run on dual ball bearings, keeping the grind consistent from the first bean to the last without the wobble or binding cheaper grinders develop over time.
