The gasket is the rubber ring that seals your moka pot, and the filter plate sits above it, holding the grounds in place — together they're what keeps pressure building instead of leaking out the sides. Over time the rubber hardens and stops sealing properly, which is usually why an older moka pot starts leaking or brewing slowly.
