About the Brand
Comandante was born out of a specialty coffee roastery outside Munich, where founder Bernd Braune kept running into the same problem: no manual grinder on the market could match the clarity of a proper lab-grade grinder. He registered the Comandante brand in 2012 and began production in 2013, but the real breakthrough came in 2016 with Nitro Blade® — a burr steel developed specifically for hand grinders rather than adapted from electric ones. Every C40 is still handmade just outside Munich, Bavaria, and it remains the grinder that competition baristas and home brewers alike reach for when clarity in the cup actually matters.
The Product
The C40 MK4 is a manual coffee grinder built around one burr: Nitro Blade®, a 39mm conical burr machined from Comandante's own high-nitrogen steel, Nitro Rex®. It's engineered to do what most hand grinders can't — cover Turkish through French press through espresso on a single axle, with a stepped click system that gives you the same setting back every time. This isn't a travel accessory that happens to grind coffee; it's a precision tool that happens to fold down small enough to travel with.
Who It's Built For
The C40 MK4 suits the home barista who's outgrown their entry-level grinder and wants one tool that handles everything from a delicate pour-over to a proper espresso shot — without the noise, static, or retention issues of a cheap electric burr. It's equally at home with someone heading to origin or a coffee competition, where a grinder needs to survive a bag, not a countertop. If you've been chasing grind consistency rather than just grind size, this is built for that specific frustration.
Key Features
Nitro Blade® Conical Burr (Precision Grind Clarity)
A 39mm conical burr machined from Comandante's proprietary Nitro Rex® steel — over 17% chromium plus vanadium and molybdenum — chosen for edge retention and a completely flavour-neutral grind, not just hardness for its own sake.
Stepped Click Adjustment (Repeatable Settings)
Around 40 click positions move the burr roughly 30 microns at a time, covering a 0–1090 micron range. Dial in a setting once, write it down, and you'll land on the exact same grind next time — no guessing, no drift.
Nitro Rex® Steel Axle & Dual Ball Bearings (Smooth, Consistent Torque)
The stainless steel crank arm and axle run on dual ball bearings, keeping the grind consistent from the first bean to the last without the wobble or binding cheaper grinders develop over time.
Two Bean Jars Included (Grind-and-Go Ready)
Every C40 MK4 ships with a brown glass Bean Jar and a virtually unbreakable clear polymer Bean Jar, each holding 40g of beans — enough for a single dose or a small batch, and both food-safe and easy to clean.
QTP® Techno-Polymer Components (Ceramic Feel, Composite Strength)
Comandante's own quartz-reinforced polymer is used where it counts — looks and feels like ceramic, but built to outlast it, and completely food-safe.
Upgradeable Axle System (Room to Grow)
The standard axle can be swapped for Comandante's Red Clix competition axle, which doubles the number of click positions — useful if you find yourself wanting finer control specifically in the espresso range.
Considered Everyday Details
A Merino wool felt mat (keeps the grinder steady and grounds contained) and a wrist strap ship with every unit — small additions that show up in daily use, not just on a spec sheet.
Why Choose This Product?
Most hand grinders make you choose between a burr that's good at espresso or one that's good at everything else — the C40 MK4 is built to not force that trade-off. If you've dealt with a grinder that gives you a different result every time you use the same setting, the click system alone solves the problem that's actually been bothering you.
Whether you're grinding a single espresso dose at home or carrying it to a farm at origin, the C40 MK4 gives you lab-level consistency in a tool built to outlast the coffee habit that made you buy it.
