About the Brand

Kalita has been building brewing equipment in Japan since 1958, and its name carries real weight in specialty coffee circles. Where Hario made its name with the cone-shaped V60, Kalita took a different engineering route — a flat-bottomed dripper with three small holes, built to slow and even out the water's path through the grounds. That flat-bottom "Wave" design is now used by home brewers and cafés on every continent.

The Product

The Kalita Wave is a flat-bottom pour-over dripper paired with Kalita's own pleated wave filter paper, which sits away from the dripper wall to let water flow evenly across the whole coffee bed. It's built to reward a steady pour rather than a perfect one, which makes it more forgiving than a cone-shaped dripper without giving up detail in the cup. Whether you're pouring your first cup or your thousandth, it's designed to get you a consistent result.

Key Features

Flat-Bottomed Brew Bed (Even Extraction)

Unlike a cone dripper, the coffee bed sits at a uniform depth across the flat base, so water contacts the grounds evenly rather than pooling at a single point.

Triple-Hole Base (Controlled, Steady Flow)

Three small drainage holes regulate how fast water passes through, giving you a wider margin for error on pour speed than a single large aperture.

Signature Wave Filter (Full Water Contact)

Kalita's pleated wave filter holds itself off the dripper wall, so air can escape freely and water reaches the entire coffee bed instead of channelling down the sides.

Two Sizes (155 or 185)

The 155 brews 1–2 cups and the 185 brews 2–4 cups, so you can size the dripper to how much you actually brew at once.

Ceramic or Stainless Steel (Choose Your Material)

Ceramic holds heat longer for a stable brew temperature, while stainless steel is lighter, more break-resistant, and better suited to travel or heavy daily use.

Made in Japan (Manufacturing Standard)

Every Kalita Wave dripper is manufactured to the same tolerances Kalita has held since 1958, so the fit between dripper and filter is consistent every time.

Who It's Built For

The Kalita Wave suits you if you want pour-over results without needing to master a cone dripper's technique first. It's equally at home as a first dripper for someone moving on from a plunger, or as the daily driver for someone who wants consistency over ceremony. Less technique, more repeatability — that's the whole point of the flat bottom.

Compatibility

The 155 dripper pairs with Kalita's 300ml Wave server, and the 185 pairs with the 500ml server, for a matched brewing setup. Both sizes require Kalita's own wave-shaped filters — standard V60 or Melitta cone filters will not fit correctly.

Summary

The Kalita Wave trades the precision-pour demands of a cone dripper for a flatter learning curve and a more forgiving cup. Pick ceramic for heat retention or stainless steel for durability, size it to how many cups you actually brew, and let the flat bottom do the rest.
